Golden opportunities in Norway

An abridged version of the final report from the Committee for Mainstreaming – Women in Science in Norway is now available in English. The report is entitled Gender balance in higher education and research – golden opportunities.

In February the Committee for Mainstreaming – Women in Science handed in its final report to the Ministry of Education and Research. In this report the committee gives its recommendations for further gender equality work in the academic sector, and summarizes the development of the gender balance and gender equality work in this sector for the past few years.

One of the recommendations from the committee is that the Ministry of Education and Research should consider integrating gender equality into the financial systems of the university and college sector. The report sketches different models of incentives, and encourages the ministry to consider a model where the institutions are rewarded with a specified sum of money for each woman that is hired either as a professor or as an associate professor. The model can later be used exclusively in the field of natural sciences.
